조영주는 사회적, 문화적인 틀 안에서 작가 개인이, 특히 여성 작가가 가지는 현실적인 고민들을 작품으로 변환시킴으로써 협업자, 관객과 함께 그 경험을 공유하고자 했다. 유럽 사회에서는 ‘이방인’, ‘서구 사회에서의 동양 여성’의 카테고리 안에서 겪는 내적인 갈등과 외적인 관계에 대해 다양한 문화권 사람들과 부딪히며 탐구했다. 귀국 후, 조영주는 한국사회가 몸살을 앓고 있는 ‘여성주의’적 이슈에 대한 작업을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다. 특히, 본인이 겪은 ‘육아’ 경험을 돌봄노동의 특성을 중심으로 조금 넓은 의미로 관객과 교감하는 것을 시도한다. 동시에, 예술사에서 다루어진 여성 신체의 이미지와 무의식적으로 소비되고 있는 동시대의 몸의 이미지에 대해 탐구하는 프로젝트를 진행 중이다. 또한, 영상과 퍼포먼스, 그리고 그러한 매체와 관객과의 관계에 대한 실험도 함께 하고 있다.
In her works, Youngjoo Cho unravels practical concerns held by artists—specifically women artists—within sociocultural frames to share her experiences with colleagues and viewers. By interacting with people from diverse cultural spheres, she explores her internal conflicts, her external relationships, and her identity as a foreigner and an Asian woman in Western society and culture. Since her return to Korea, Cho has produced a series of works dealing with the issue of feminism in Korean society. Centering on her own experience of childcare and the nature of care work, she seeks to broadly relate to viewers. She is also simultaneously studying the art-historical image of the female body, how images of the body are recklessly consumed in the contemporary era, and the relationship between video, performance, and viewers.
