권오상(1974년생)은 서울 출신의 조각가로, 사진과 비전통적 재료를 결합하여 조각의 개념을 재정의해왔다. 그는 조각의 경계를 다섯 개의 주요 연작—Deodorant Type, The Sculpture, The Flat, New Structure, Relief—을 통해 확장해 나간다. 초기작인 Deodorant Type 연작에서는 가볍고 단단한 스티로폼(ISO-pink)에 수백 장의 사진 조각을 덧붙여, ‘무겁고 견고한 덩어리’라는 조각의 전통적 개념에 도전한다. The Sculpture 시리즈에서는 명품 자동차와 같은 21세기적 욕망의 상징을 청동으로 재현하면서도, 매끈한 마감을 의도적으로 피함으로써 조형미에 대한 기존의 미적 기준에 의문을 제기한다. New Structure는 이전 Flat 시리즈를 알루미늄과 칼더(Calder)식 구조 개념으로 3차원화하여 조각과 공간의 관계를 탐구한다. 가장 최근의 Relief 연작에서는 평면 이미지를 입체 부조로 재구성하여 전통적 조각 기법과 디지털 이미지를 융합한다.
권오상은 홍익대학교 조소과에서 학사와 석사 학위를 받았다. 일민미술관, 수원시립미술관 등 국내 주요 미술관과 함께, 에르메스 시드니, 맨체스터 아트 갤러리 등 국제 무대에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 런던 V&A 뮤지엄, 국립현대미술관, 런던 사치 갤러리 등에서 열린 단체전에도 참여했다. BMW, 재규어, 에르메스, 라이엇 게임즈 등과 협업하며 동시대 예술과 대중문화의 경계를 넘는 작업을 이어가고 있다. 그의 작품은 리움미술관, 서울시립미술관 등 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다.
GWON Osang (b. 1974) is a Seoul-born sculptor known for redefining sculpture by merging photography and unconventional materials. He explores the boundaries of sculpture through five key series: Deodorant Type, The Sculpture, The Flat, New Structure, and Relief. His early Deodorant Type series uses lightweight ISO-pink (hardened Styrofoam) covered with hundreds of photographic fragments, challenging the traditional notion of heavy, solid sculpture. In The Sculpture, he recreates 21st-century ideals like luxury cars in bronze but deliberately avoids polished finishes to question conventional aesthetics. New Structure expands his earlier Flat series into three-dimensional forms using aluminum and Calder-inspired concepts, investigating the relationship between sculpture and space. The most recent Relief series reconstructs flat images into dimensional carvings, fusing traditional techniques with digital imagery.
GWON earned both his BFA and MFA in sculpture from Hongik University. He has exhibited widely, with solo shows at Ilmin Museum of Art, Suwon Museum of Art, and international venues such as Hermès Sydney and Manchester Art Gallery. His work has also appeared in group exhibitions at institutions like the V&A Museum (London), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), and Saatchi Gallery (London). He has collaborated with brands including BMW, Jaguar, Hermès, and Riot Games to bridge contemporary art and popular culture. His works are in major public collections, including the Leeum Museum of Art and the Seoul Museum of Art.
